Good Credit Doesn't Make Car Shoppers Less Payment-Conscious, FlexPath DXP Study Finds
Good Credit Doesn't Make Car Shoppers Less Payment-Conscious, FlexPath DXP Study Finds
FlexPath DXP has released its inaugural Automotive Shopper Credit & Payment Behavior Study, analyzing actual behavior from identity-verified vehicle shoppers across participating dealership websites from January through September 2026.
The study challenges a longstanding assumption in automotive retail: shopping by monthly payment isn't just a Subprime behavior.
Key Findings
- 8 in 10 Prime and Super Prime shoppers used Shop-By-Payment to explore vehicles by monthly budget, about the same rate as Subprime shoppers (78% vs. 80%).
- Nearly 1.5 times more likely: Prime and Super Prime shoppers were more likely than Subprime shoppers to prequalify for a specific vehicle (44% vs. 30%).
- 81% of Prime and Super Prime vehicle-specific prequalification requests originated from inventory search results or vehicle detail pages, compared with 7.5% from finance pages.
- 81.5% of Prime and Super Prime shoppers who began by prequalifying for a specific vehicle subsequently explored additional vehicles through Shop-By-Payment.
- 1 in 4 payment-shopping sessions began between 9 PM and 8 AM, highlighting the importance of providing personalized payment information whenever consumers shop.
Three Questions Driving Vehicle Shopping
The research identifies three distinct questions consumers seek to answer:
- Can I qualify?
- Can I qualify for this vehicle?
- What vehicles fit my monthly budget?
The findings suggest that consumers across credit tiers want personalized payment information while shopping for vehicles, not simply at the end of the financing process.
Research Based on Actual Shopper Behavior
Unlike traditional consumer surveys, the study examines observed activity from 4,773 verified shoppers with assigned credit tiers, drawn from a broader analysis group of 17,218 verified shoppers.
The findings reflect shoppers who engaged with financing and payment experiences at participating dealerships and are not intended to represent all U.S. vehicle shoppers.
Future Research
FlexPath DXP plans to expand its automotive shopper research to explore how additional factors, including income, age, gender, and credit profiles, relate to vehicle selection, monthly payment budgets, and financing behavior.
Future studies will continue to focus on observed consumer behavior rather than self-reported survey responses.
